Boundaries
The world in my head is split in two. Apparently, there is a need to divide my new work (January and February 2021) in a bottom and top part with a horizontal separation. The inspiration is the mountains that I can see from my house: the Serra d’Arga and the Serra Luzia.
In first instance this is what the paintings are about: an abstracting depiction of mountains or oceans surmounted by the sky. It is, however, not only a landscape projected onto canvas, it is about division and boundaries. The white line indicates a frontier. At the time of painting the borders with Spain were closed and Portugal and the rest of the world were separated from each other.
The line is the most important. Whether you “live” in the upper or the lower part is a choice: where do I want to be or where can I be. Our freedom (of movement) is currently restricted.
