Material like work
As a young and starting modern art painter – I was and still am – very much impressed by Rothko, Tapiès and the Dutch Jaap Wagemaker. Their material kind of paintings are very appealing to me. My first paintings are a study of materials. I purchase paint and canvas and use iron and cobalt oxides that I incorporate in the paint and add white sand to give it more structure.
I like to explore what I can do with paint, brushes and tools like spatulas, sponges and bits of zinc. Sometimes I am more of a plasterer busy getting the paint on canvas. With this type of work I had my first exhibition at Gallery Biervliet on Amsterdam, Prinsengracht.
